Originally a short par 5 characterized by a severely sloping green, this hole has been converted to a 425-yard par four. The fairway has been widened to create a new landing area for drives and both fairway bunkers have been removed. The second shot now plays to an uphill green guarded on the left front by a large bunker. The green has been re-contoured to create a more level putting surface and to increase potential hole locations. Hole number one certainly creates a challenge for golfers of all skill levels.

The second hole proves a true risk and reward hole. Although drivable by the longer hitters, a more prudent play for most players is a fairway wood or long iron from the tee. This leaves a short iron into one of the flattest greens on the course. A river birch tree that stood short-left in front of the green has been removed. A new swale has been cut into the fairway across the front of the green and a new pot bunker has been added to guard the left front. The back left greenside bunker has been removed and a collection area for shots over the green has been created. Accuracy is a plus for both the drive and the second shot on this tight, short hole.

A new championship tee located to the left of the original tee has added approximately 20 yards to this hole. A number of trees have been removed from the left side of the fairway to open up the driving area. A strong dogleg to the left, the tee shot requires a draw to open up the approach to the green. The approach shot plays dramatically downhill to a wide, but narrow green from front to back. The front portion of the green slopes away from the player making front pin placements very difficult to find. Shots over the green will find a large bunker or a chipping collection area.

This hole is a modest par 3 of 160 yards from the back tee - miss the green however, and a bogey is almost a certainty. The front left bunker has been removed and the right-hand bunker (never visible from the tee before) has been moved forward to collect all tee shots short and right of the green. The front right bunker also provides visual intimidation from the tee and makes for several tough pin locations. A severe slope right of the green careens errant shots away from the flag.

Just as a draw was the preferred tee shot off of the third hole, a fade is required to position the tee shot on hole five. Miss the fairway on this hole and you will have to call on your scrambling skills to save a par as tree trouble lines both sides of this hole. The back left side bunker has been removed and a new right front bunker has been added. Collection areas both right and left of the green create plenty of opportunity to test your chipping skills.

Notes on holes six through nine: Under the renovation, these holes are entirely new. Course architect Mike Gleason felt that rerouting these holes would create a dramatic new look. This was dictated by the addition of a new irrigation pond on the former eighth hole, space availability around the new clubhouse, and better utilization of the winding stream that dissects these holes.

The new sixth hole plays down old number nine fairway to a green located near the former eighth green. The old cart storage barn and maintenance facility have been demolished, opening up the right side of the new fairway. The fairway has been recontoured to level the landing area for tee shots. A medium to short iron second shot will play slightly downhill to a green guarded in front by two bunkers.

The new seventh hole is stunning. The hole plays approximately 535 yards from the championship tees. The tee shot must carry the new two-acre irrigation pond. The longest hitters may challenge the trees down the right side of the fairway and try to shorten the hole by cutting the corner. The second shot plays across the creek to a landing area some 50-75 yards short of the green. The new green complex sits on top of the hill at one of the highest points on the course. This is a true three-shot hole for all but the longest of hitters.

We move from one of the longest holes on the course to the shortest. The new eighth hole is a 150-yard par 3 playing downhill with Long Creek as a backdrop. Don’t let the yardage fool you as the green complex for this hole is one of the most difficult on the course. A multi-tiered green creates many challenging pin locations. Several deep greenside bunkers collect errant tee shots, making par a good score. The addition of a few large boulders and ornamental grasses complete the landscaping around this green, making it one of the most scenic holes on the course.

The finishing hole on the new front nine is among the most difficult. A tight driving hole, the fairway is framed on the left by a winding stream and is guarded on the right by a stand of hardwoods. After finding the fairway, the player is faced with a second shot to an elevated green with two bunkers guarding the front. Determining the yardage for the second shot is difficult as the putting surface is not visible from the fairway due to the change in elevation. A two-tiered green with a rise of some five feet from the lower tier to the upper tier will challenge your putting skills. A birdie on this hole will likely win a skin.

Playing at slightly more than 500 yards from the championship tees, this hole offers birdie opportunities for many players. However, with hazards in play both left and right, an errant shot can quickly lead to a double bogey. The landing area for the second shot has been softened by removing much of the slope from the lay-up area. The pond has been extended toward the green creating a much longer carry should you decide to go for the green on your second shot. A waterfall feature has been introduced to the pond making number ten one of our signature holes.

This straightaway par 4 offers par and birdie possibilities for all skill levels. With two fairway bunkers added to the left and trees running the length of the right side, this is one of the narrowest driving holes on the course. A deep swale has been added to the front and right of the green. The bunker to the left of the old green has been removed and added to the right front. With a short iron in hand this is a good hole to take dead aim.

Buckle down as you approach the twelfth, as this is the last of the short holes on the back nine. Playing uphill from the tee, a good drive leaves a second shot to a green surrounded by two deep bunkers. The new greenside bunker guarding the right front makes carrying the green a necessity. Several new trees have been planted down the left side of the fairway and will dramatically change the complexion of this hole as they grow.

Hole number thirteen begins a stretch of finishing holes that rival any in the Charlotte area. This hole has been lengthened to a formidable 237 yards. With the increase in yardage, the green has doubled in size. Several trees short of the green to the left have been removed and mounding helps direct tee shots back toward the green. The left hand bunker has been removed and an additional right hand bunker added. A par on this hole will certainly be worthy of bragging rights.

This is the number one handicap hole on the course. Playing 450 yards slightly uphill, this hole requires two well-struck shots to make a par 4. The fairway has been expanded to the left and the ridge running through the fairway softened. Several trees have been removed from the right-hand side to open up the second shot. The fairway bunker short and right of the green has been removed and a few grass hollows added. Make par on this hole and you will probably have the honor on the next tee.

This new championship tee has been added to the right of the existing tee complex. The new tee adds a few extra yards to the length of the hole as well as changes the angle of the drive. A fairway bunker has been added to the upper left hand side of the hole making it play as more of a dogleg. The new irrigation system provides water to areas between holes 15 and 16 that previously were unable to be irrigated. This allows a better stand of rough and will put a premium on driving the ball into the fairway. The large mounds left of the green have been lowered. The deep bunker guarding the right front of the green has been expanded to the left making approach shots more demanding.

Certainly the most notable change to this hole is the reshaping of the large hill that drops off to create a blind tee shot. The hill has been lowered to a gentler slope and the dirt used to build up the right side of the fairway. This should help keep tee shots from running into the right rough and hazard. A new championship tee adds approximately 10 to 12 yards to the hole. This is the only green on the course without a sand trap but the slope in front forces the player to fly the second shot all the way to the pin. Any shots left short of the green will roll down the hill creating a difficult pitch.

Playing 205 yards from the back tee, this hole offers an extreme challenge en route to the clubhouse. The green on this hole has also more than doubled in size. The front and back right bunkers have been removed and two bunkers positioned to protect the front and left of the green. The front of the new green has been raised to create several new pin placements. The overall length of the green makes as much as a three club difference from front to back pin placements. Be sure to sharpen your putting skills before attacking this hole.

Another par 4 over 400 yards awaits you on the final tee. A straight drive leaves a medium iron approach shot of approximately 150 yards to a green situated some 25 to 30 feet above the fairway. A new eighteenth green has been built slightly to the right of the old green and a front left greenside bunker added. This multi-tiered green offers many challenging pin placements before you hit the nineteenth hole!

Additional improvements and upgrades:
All existing bunkers have been rebuilt with proper drainage and are framed with zoysia grass.

All greens have been rebuilt to USGA specifications to insure tour quality putting surfaces. A blend of A-1 and A-4 creeping bent grass was chosen for the grass on the greens.

All 18 fringes have been sown with meyer zoysia grass. This variety impedes the invasion of Bermuda and other unwanted grasses onto the putting greens. Zoysia also makes an excellent chipping surface.

A new Toro E-Osmac dual-line irrigation system has been installed. It includes wireless controls from a central computer in the new maintenance facility. With over 475 sprinkler heads, this new system provides irrigation cover for the entire course.

All tees and fairways have been sodded or sprigged with 419 Bermuda grass, a thin-blade hybrid grass that offers excellent coverage and outstanding playability.
